Dear Mr. Hunn:

Thank you for writing to me in support of a World Service Corps, to promote world peace by providing Americans the opportunity to improve conditions in America and abroad.  I admire your commitment to promoting a more peaceful American foreign policy, and I am glad that we agree that promoting peace throughout the world should be one of America’s highest priorities.  Also, I very much enjoyed getting the chance to meet with you in March.

Like you, I am committed to advancing a peaceful American foreign policy.  Promoting multilateralism and non-proliferation will make us more secure in the long run, and that’s why I have opposed the war in Iraq from the very beginning.  National security is supposed to be about protecting our people, but the current administration’s cavalier foreign policy encourages further violence and increases the risk of nuclear destruction.  Only by promoting an effective national security strategy that is based on conflict prevention, diplomacy, multilateralism, and nonproliferation can we truly secure America for the future while at the same time holding onto the liberties and values that make this country great.

I appreciate the hard work that you have put into drafting a resolution to establish a World Service Corps.  You are correct that more young Americans need to participate in service-related activities around the world.  This will help to alleviate world problems and will also help to improve America’s standing with other countries.  In our meeting, I mentioned that another Member of Congress might have introduced something similar to the World Service Corps.  My staff learned that during the last Congress, Rep. Charlie Rangel introduced a resolution to establish a national Civilian Volunteer Service Reserve program.  This legislation, H.R. 3503, would create a national volunteer service corps available to respond to domestic or international situations as necessary.  Unfortunately, the Republican leadership failed to bring this bill to the House floor for a vote before the 108th Congress ended in December 2004.  However, I am optimistic that Rep. Rangel will reintroduce this legislation during the 109th Congress.  You can be assured that I will do everything in my power to work for a more sensible American foreign policy by supporting the creation of volunteer organizations that promote global peace and understanding.

Again, it is good to hear from you.  The people of Marin and Sonoma counties are the most important voices I listen to as I serve in Congress.

Sincerely,                                                                 I’m not a P.C. Volunteer,

Lynn Woolsey                               but totally support                                                         you.       L
