Thank
you for writing to me about AWSC. It sounds like just
what we need – a positive plan to counter all the terrible reasons why people
hate and fear Americans. As I told a group of
Christian businessmen this week, we have had terrorism since the beginning of
civilization (perhaps before) Using violence to fight violence hasn’t worked
from the beginning and experience should tell us that there’s no reason to
think violence will ever be a successful strategy. This
is why I am a strong supporter of creating a Department of Peace. Imagine having someone at the cabinet level at every
executive meeting as a champion for peaceful solutions to conflict, such as
those proposed in the AWSC or other similar plans. I
would like to see AWSC or something like it as a component of the Department of
Peace because I think it would go a long way toward creating a future where
fear is not our master and terrorism is a part of our past. Many
of the senior citizens I know who are actively involved in the peace movement
today, once served in the Peace Corps. Imagine if our
