LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Several
months ago Saddam Hussein proposed to sell his oil for “free” to the world. In
the best capitalistic tradition, the world refused to take economic advantage
of the poor fellow. Now, however, it may be time to make a deal.
The United Nations should encourage oil importers to
pay market rates for all Iraqi oil. The proceeds of those oil payments would
establish five escrowed accounts from which payments could be made in the following
manner
* Pay for the war’s destructive costs in Kuwait, Saudi
Arabia and Israel, including personal compensation.
* Pay the uncovered costs incurred by the fighting
allies.
* Fund a United Nations conference to assist in
solving the Palestinian dispute.
* Pay the costs of a U.N. peacekeeping force for as
long as it is needed in that region.
* Improve the educational and economic systems in
Iraq.
