I fully support Peoples Lobby’s American World Service Corps
Congressional Proposals.
The terrorists were trained in Afghanistan,
Pakistan, and the Sudan. Had we been building those countries, we
wouldn’t have had terrorists coming out of them. When is the last time we had Peace Corps
volunteers in those places?
1967 was the last time a Peace Corps volunteer served in Afghanistan, Pakistan,
or Sudan
where terrorists are grown. So if we
reenergize groups like the Peace Corps, through this American World Service
Corps bill, we can stem the recruitment of terrorists. By showing those needy parts of the world
what can-do Americans can do, we build their democratic foundations, reduce
terrorist recruitment, and win hearts and mind.
Something we are doing in reverse now.
And what about Katrina?
FEMA didn’t know how to pass out toilet paper, let alone rebuild homes,
park trailers, and open schools. If this
American World Service Corps program had been up and running for years prior to
Katrina, we could have had Americorps, Head Start, and Habitat workers
rebuilding New Orleans
the day after she blew by. With the
American World Service Corps in place, we Americans could rebuild our nation
even if and when we had blowhards running agencies in
DC.
The American World
Service Corps nation builds abroad and can rebuild parts of America at
home. It is the army that studious heads
at a Department of Peace, if we had one, would say we need to spread peace in
the world.
When I am elected, I
will cosponsor of this legislation, which we needed about 40 years ago…
If Brady or President Bush wanted to knock off terrorists
and win hearts and minds, they’d be for this too.
